On August 13, 2023, we honored two early Bothell residents who had served in our country’s Civil War. Robert Campbell and John Rhea died over one hundred years ago, and their gravesites in Bothell’s Pioneer Cemetery had been long neglected. Thanks to research by Richard Heisler, who hosted the event, new markers were installed for the two veterans. The ceremony paid tribute to their service and their roles in the history of our community.

Descendants of Robert Campbell gathered at his grave, accompanied by members of the Sons of Union Veterans. Sadly, his 1919 gravestone had been broken by vandals in the 1970s. In 2023, the new marker was set in place.

The grave of John Rhea had been forgotten and overgrown with vegetation for many years, on the far southern edge of the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery. Richard Heisler’s research enabled its recovery and the placement of a new marker.

Following the morning in the cemetery, many of the participants joined others in the Park at Bothell Landing for a celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Hannan House.
