On August 13, 2023, we honored two early Bothell residents who had served in our country’s Civil War. Robert Campbell and John Rhea died over one hundred years ago, and their gravesites in Bothell’s Pioneer Cemetery had been long neglected. Thanks to research by Richard Heisler, who hosted the event, new markers were installed for the two veterans. The ceremony paid tribute to their service and their roles in the history of our community.
and many of his descendants and associated early Bothell-area residents.
Descendants of Robert Campbell gathered at his grave, accompanied by members of the Sons of Union Veterans. Sadly, his 1919 gravestone had been broken by vandals in the 1970s. In 2023, the new marker was set in place.
From Wikipedia: “The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is an American congressionally chartered fraternal organization that carries out activities to preserve the history and legacy of the United States Armed Forces veterans who fought during the Civil War.” To see the entire article, click here.
The grave of John Rhea had been forgotten and overgrown with vegetation for many years, on the far southern edge of the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery. Richard Heisler’s research enabled its recovery and the placement of a new marker.
Following the morning in the cemetery, many of the participants joined others in the Park at Bothell Landing for a celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Hannan House.
A few days later, a television broadcast of “Eric’s Heroes” on KOMO, Channel 4, showed our day of remembrance. For a link to that video, click on the image below.
